Five Apple Products You Shouldn’t Buy Now

Rumors suggest that Apple has several new devices before the end of the year, including a range of Macs and iPads. It doesn’t look like we’ll be getting an October event in 2022, but updates are coming soon, likely via a press release. If you’re planning to buy a Mac or iPad, be sure to check out our list to find out what’s safe to pick up and what’s not.

The iPad Pro was last updated in April 2021, and we expect an updated version before the end of 2022. There aren’t any major design changes that we know are coming, but there are some features worth waiting for.

iPad Pro Big Ol Logo

Both the 11-inch and 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro‌ models are getting a refresh, but rumors suggest only the 12.9-inch model will have a mini-LED display, despite information pointing to Apple moving the technology to the next level. could bring both models.

Apple’s updated ‌iPad‌ Pros are expected to use the M2 chip first introduced in the new MacBook Air in June, bringing speed and performance improvements. There have also been rumors of wireless charging support, with Apple perhaps adding a new, larger glass Apple logo on the back that enables MagSafe charging.

Reverse wireless charging is also an option with the new ‌iPad Pro‌ models that can charge iPhones, AirPods and other devices.

Apple has long offered a low-cost ‘iPad’ available for ~$300, but this year the low-cost ‘iPad’ gets some trickdown features previously limited to more expensive iPads.

10th Generation iPad MySmartPrice Render

Apple is going to refresh the tired old design that the cheap iPad‌ has been using for years and introduce a 10.5-inch display with a more modern look with flat edges and rounded corners. We’ve seen this design before for the iPad mini, iPad Air, and ‌iPad Pro‌.

The flat design usually comes with a borderless interface, but rumors suggest the ‌iPad‌ will continue to have top and bottom bezels, along with a Touch ID Home button, but it remains to be seen if that’s true. Apple could opt for the same Touch ID‌ power button design used for the iPad mini‌ and the iPad Air‌.

With the exception of the cheap ‌iPad‌, every iPad‌ uses a USB-C port, and Apple is switching Lightning for USB-C with the 10th generation ‌iPad‌ refresh.

We could also see some improvements to the camera, and a faster chip is for sure (probably the A14), but one thing the “iPad” could lose is the headphone jack. Removing the headphone jack would bring the cheap iPad‌ in line with the rest of the iPad‌ range.

The M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pros came out last October and we could see new ‌M2‌ Pro and ‌M2‌ Max models appearing before the end of the year. New MacBook Pro models are said to be slated for release this fall, but there’s a chance the timing could be delayed due to supply constraints Apple has faced.

There hasn’t been a Mac mini refresh since 2020, when the M1 chip was added, but Apple has no plans to discontinue the desktop computer just yet. A refresh is in the works and updated ‌Mac mini‌ devices may include M2‌ and ‌M2‌ Pro chips.

We don’t expect any design changes, and the very best chips will likely be reserved for the Mac Studio, which is a hybrid of the Mac Pro and the Mac mini‌.

Apple TV

Apple last updated the Apple TV in April 2021, and it may be time for a refresh. Rumors suggest that a new model with an A14 chip and 4GB of RAM is in development and could be ready to launch before the end of 2022.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said several times this year that Apple plans to lower the price of the Apple TV‌ when it gets refreshed, but whether that will happen remains to be seen.

Since the ‌Mac Pro‌ hasn’t been updated since 2019 and doesn’t use Apple silicone chips yet, it’s clear that now is not a good time to buy. While we heard rumors in early 2022 suggesting that the Mac Pro‌ could get a refresh before the end of the year, it now looks like a new Mac Pro‌ won’t be released until 2023.

While we may still have a few months to go before the ‌Mac Pro‌ sees an update, we recommend that you don’t buy one now. You’ll definitely want to wait for Apple to bring its ultra-fast Apple silicon chips to its very best professional machine.

Rumors suggest that the Mac Pro‌ will use an M2‌ Ultra, an upgrade to the M1 Ultra first introduced in the ‌Mac Studio‌ and an even more powerful ‌M2‌ Extreme chip. The ‌M1 Ultra‌ has a 20-core CPU and a 64-core GPU, and the ‌M2‌ Ultra could be even more powerful.

The ‌M2‌ Extreme will be Apple’s most powerful chip yet, and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has said the chip could have more than 40 CPU cores and 128 GPU cores.

Packing up

Keep in mind that this list is based on rumors we’ve heard, so it’s possible that some of these renewals could be delayed until 2023. Timing Apple product releases isn’t always easy, but if you can wait for a purchase, it’s a good idea to hold off on a new product announcement if you’re concerned about the latest and greatest device.
