Patients and loved ones express concern as MercyOne tackles IT outage

Portions of MercyOne’s computer system are currently offline. KCCI spoke to patients and their families who shared their concerns about the current procedures MercyOne is following.

“They said the computers aren’t working. And I was like, ‘Well, computers are shutting down’. But then they said they’ve been on the road for 98 hours and I was like, ‘Well, that’s quite a bit,’ said Mollie Topf.

Topf’s mother is in hospital for treatment for her Parkinson’s disease.

“With my mother, she is elderly, she has a history of health problems, so it is very important for a health care professional to look at the history of health problems and know what medicine she is responding to, what medicines are good for her, so if they can’t view that history on a computer that worries me,” Topf said.

“If they can’t get to her cards, how would they know what drugs, if there was a drug change, or even get tests to see what was actually wrong with her?” said Mayberry. “Where was the contingency plan when they decided to go digital?”
