MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — North Carolina reached the top of the Coastal Division with a 27-24 win over Miami on Saturday night—UNC’s fourth straight win over the Hurricanes.
UNC took a 14-0 lead with Drake Maye’s 74-yard touchdown pass to JJ Jones, followed by an 8-play 98-yard UNC touchdown drive. The Hurricanes finished the half with two quick scores to make it 21-17 at halftime after Maye’s interception led to a field goal in Miami. While the offense failed to make it into the end zone, the defense played some of its best football of the season in the second half. UNC stopped the Miami run game (23 carries for 41 yards) and challenged Tyler Van Dyke (42-57 for 496 yards) to win it with his arm—and he almost did, until the Tar Heels sealed the win when DeAndre Boykins intercepted a pass from Van Dyke with eight seconds left. Power Echols and Cedric Gray led the defense with a combined 27 tackles. Maye’s line was 19-of-28 for 309 yards, with two TDs and two interceptions.
The 5-1 Tar Heels take on in-state rival Duke at Wade Wallace Stadium this coming Saturday at 8pm
