Abbott is voluntarily recalling some of its Similac ready-to-use liquid baby food due to a bottle defect.
The Food and Drug Administration announced the recall on Friday, stating that certain quantities of Abbott’s liquid baby food products are being recalled because less than 1% of bottles “may not be completely sealed,” which “could lead to spoilage.”
According to the FDA, the affected products are: Similac® Pro-Total ComfortTM, Similac® 360 Total Care®, Similac 360 Total Care Sensitive, Similac® Special Care® 24, Similac Stage 1, Similac® NeoSure®, Similac Water (Sterilized), and Pedialyte electrolyte solution.
If consumed, individuals may experience “gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting.”

Several lot numbers of the affected products are being recalled and were manufactured at the Columbus, Ohio facility.
The FDA says the recall is not expected to affect the “general supply of infant formula in the U.S.,” and said the recalled products were primarily distributed to hospitals and some doctor’s offices, distributors and retailers in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Production of Similac 2 fluid ounces/59 milliliters Ready-to-Feed liquid formula products given to hospitals and other healthcare providers will continue on another production line, according to the announcement.
The recall does not include other brands of powder or liquid formulations manufactured at the Columbus facility or elsewhere.
Abbott’s Executive Vice President for Nutritional Products, Joe Manning, said the company is addressing the issue and minimizing inconvenience to customers.
